FAQ
In this FAQ you will find answers to key questions about the XORAYA N4000 data logger – from typical application scenarios and technical features to how it compares to other solutions.
For which applications is the N4000 typically used?
The XORAYA N4000 is a data logger for vehicle networks. The data logger records communication data and measurement data from bus systems such as CAN, CAN-FD, LIN and FlexRay.
Typical applications for the XORAYA N4000 data logger include:
- Vehicle development: recording and analysis of communication in vehicle networks during the development of control units and vehicle functions
- Test drives and vehicle testing: long-term recording of bus communication and measurement data in test vehicles
- Test benches and laboratory environments: logging of communication and measurement data during component or system tests
- Analysis of vehicle networks: investigation and diagnosis of communication on bus systems, such as CAN, LIN and FlexRay.
- Function validation: analysis and troubleshooting of vehicle functions, for example in the areas of ADAS, infotainment or comfort systems.
- Quality assurance: recording and analysis of communication data during validation and series preparation
Which devices is the N4000 compatible with?
The XORAYA N4000 supports expansion via external storage and probes. Additionally, it can function as a probe itself within a distributed system or be combined with other data loggers.
What is the difference between the N4000 and the N4000+?
The XORAYA N4000+ data logger is the enhanced version of the XORAYA N4000 data logger. The most significant difference between the N4000 and the N4000+ is the support for Automotive Ethernet and the higher performance, which is reflected, for example, in the write speed.
In terms of specifics, the XORAYA N4000+ data logger also features a more powerful FPGA, new interface configurations, support for a 4x digital input add-on card, an Ethernet relay for signal pass-through, Transparency Mode, DLT Inject, and PTP Timesync, as well as an extended temperature range thanks to an improved cooling design.
Which bus systems and interfaces does the N4000 support?
Several hardware variants are available for the XORAYA N4000. Each variant combines different numbers and types of supported bus systems and interfaces.
The supported bus systems and interfaces of the data logger include
- CAN (Controller Area Network)
- CAN-FD (CAN with Flexible Data Rate)
- LIN (Local Interconnect Network)
- FlexRay
- Gigabit Ethernet (1000BASE-TX)
- Analog (Analog inputs)
- RS-232
These hardware configurations enable the parallel recording of several vehicle networks with a single automotive data logger.
What software solutions can be used to operate and analyze the N4000?
Like all XORAYA logging products, the N4000 can be configured, read, and operated using the XORAYA Suite. The Suite provides customers with full functionality for working with the logger, and no additional tools need to be installed separately. One installation—and the customer has everything under control.
To operate and automate the data logger on the test bench, X2E also offers the XORAYA SDK. In addition, the XORAYA mobile app for smartphones and tablets is supported.
The N4000 C40 generally operates using firmware version 5, which means that full configuration and control are also possible via the WebGUI.
How durable is the N4000 under real-world operating conditions (temperature, vibration)?
The XORAYA N4000 and N4000+ data loggers are designed for use in demanding test and development environments. They are deployed under real-world conditions, such as vehicle testing in hot or cold climates.
The devices support a temperature range of -40 to +65°C and are designed for reliable operation under vibration and typical mechanical loads encountered in vehicles.
What sets the N4000 apart from other products on the market?
The XORAYA N4000 combines broad interface support, modular expandability, and robust data bandwidth in a single system. This enables the parallel recording of multiple vehicle networks—including Automotive Ethernet. In conjunction with the XORAYA platform, scalable logging systems can also be set up for complex vehicle testing.
The XORAYA N4000 differs from many data loggers on the market due to the following key features:
- Support for modern vehicle networks in one device
The N4000 supports HS-CAN, CAN-FD, RS-232, FlexRay, LIN, Gigabit Ethernet and analog inputs. This means that different vehicle networks and sensor signals can be recorded in parallel without having to use several specialized loggers. - Modular architecture for flexible test setups
The N4000 offers flexible customization options for development and test projects. Individual hardware and function configurations enable seamless integration into existing vehicle and test environments. - Solid data bandwidth for modern vehicle architectures
With a data bandwidth of up to 3 Gbit/s, data from several vehicle networks can be recorded simultaneously. This is particularly relevant for Ethernet-based vehicle architectures and data-intensive measurements. - Robustness for real vehicle testing
The N4000 is designed for use in test vehicles and is resistant to temperature and vibration. - Expandability within a system platform
The logger can be combined with other devices and storage solutions by integrating it into the XORAYA system platform. This allows scalable logging systems with multiple devices to be set up for complex measurement tasks.
